Old WAC enemies fight against each other again.

Colorado State football has faced UTEP 35 times, but this 2024 game will be the first time the two teams have faced each other since 2013. Colorado State's 21-point second-half lead was nearly blown, but the Rams held on.

This is how it happened:

Final score: CSU 27, UTEP 17

The CSU offensive can secure this victory.

The Rams run out the clock and Jordan Noyes scores a 39-yard field goal with 1:32 left.

CSU leads 27:17.

Things are getting nervous at Canvas Stadium as UTEP attempts a comeback.

UTEP just penetrates CSU territory, but a bad snap on third and 1 leads to a turnover on downs.

CSU ball at UTEP's 49, 7:15 minutes left, Rams lead 24-17.

– Kevin Lytle

The first play of the fourth quarter is a 55-yard touchdown pass from Cade McConnell to Kenny Odom (their second touchdown of the game).

CSU turned a 21-point game into seven. It was a 92-yard drive in nine plays.

The Rams lead 24-17 with 14:51 minutes left.

With 15 minutes left, Colorado State is leading 24-10.

UTEP has a 2nd and 10 at its own 45 to start the fourth quarter.

CSU threw pass interference to give UTEP its first touchdown drive. Miners rushed for 75 yards in seven plays.

Colorado State leads 24-10, 4:26 minutes left in the third quarter.

– Kevin Lytle

The CSU defense continues to let UTEP down.

The Rams advance into the red zone but cannot score a touchdown.

Jordan Noyes scores a 37-yard field goal and puts CSU in the lead 24-3, 7:32 minutes left in the third quarter. The Rams have rushed for 200 yards so far (6.9 yards per run).

– Kevin Lytle

CSU receiver Armani Winfield had an exceptionally tough game with several important drops.

Then he makes a great play. On the third and decisive attempt from the 5, he makes a diving catch in the corner of the end zone and turns the blocked punt into a touchdown.

He gets a big hug from Jay Norvell on the sidelines.

Colorado State leads UTEP 21-3 with 11:54 left in the third quarter.

– Kevin Lytle

Sloppy play by UTEP (two fumbled snaps) leads to a punt on the first drive of the second half. CSU makes UTEP pay for it when Dane Olson blocks the punt.

Owen Long recovers at UTEP’s 7-yard line.

– Kevin Lytle

CSU leads 14-3 against UTEP at halftime.

The Rams have 244 yards of offense, while UTEP only has 94.

CSU has 157 rush yards, but Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi is only 8-13 for 87 yards and one interception (he was injured by a couple of key drops from Armani Winfield).

UTEP QB Skyler Locklear is only 7-15 for 55 yards (and one pick). UTEP is averaging 2.7 yards per carry.

– Kevin Lytle

Colorado State with a much-needed big play as Avery Morrow breaks through the middle for a 73-yard touchdown run.

Rams lead 14-3 with 5:24 left before halftime.

Morrow has 118 yards on nine carries.

– Kevin Lytle

Colorado State's defense holds firm after the interception and forces a long field goal.

UTEP's Buzz Flabiano entered the game with a 2-5 record on the season, but scored from 40 yards.

The CSU's lead was reduced to 7:3 by halftime 6:12 minutes later.

– Kevin Lytle

Right after CSU takes the ball, Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi returns it with a careless throw on third down. UTEP ball at CSU's 28.

That’s already four INTs for BFN this season.

– Kevin Lytle

UTEP with a 32-yard pass to the CSU 12-yard line, the first time the Miners moved the ball that day.

It doesn't last, however. CSU safety Henry Blackburn makes a great read of a short slant and jumps the route for an interception. It's CSU's second interception this season. It's the first time this season that a CSU opponent has made it into the red zone but failed to score a TD.

Rams ball on their own 13.

– Kevin Lytle

CSU started a nice drive after being pinned at their own 1 following a punt. Avery Morrow ran 20 yards and CSU got into UTEP territory.

But the Rams had a fourth-and-one attempt at the UTEP 42 and a direct snap to Justin Marshall yielded no yards and CSU lost the game on downs.

UTEP ball at their own 42 with 10:49 until halftime.

CSU still leads 7-0. The Rams have 160 yards to 33, and they might regret not having a bigger lead.

– Kevin Lytle

The Rams stalled on offense after the first drive, but the defense was good. CSU leads UTEP 7-0 after the first drive.

UTEP has a 4th-and-6 at CSU's 40 early in the second quarter.

– Kevin Lytle

CSU desperately needs to put more pressure on the quarterback and make a good statement on the first drive: Mukendi Wa-Kalonji faces Skyler Locklear and forces an incomplete third-down pass on UTEP's first drive.

Ideal start for the CSU.

– Kevin Lytle

A largely ideal opening drive for the Rams. Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi missed an early long shot intended for Caleb Goodie, but responded with a 36-yard pass to rookie Jordan Ross.

The Rams then converted a 4th and 1 from the UTEP 5 before Avery Morrow scored on a 2-yard touchdown run.

8:52 minutes before the end of the first quarter, CSU leads 7-0. It was a 75-yard drive in 12 plays and 6:08.

– Kevin Lytle

Due to injuries, there are several changes in the CSU lineup. Tanner Morley starts at left guard (Alex Foster injured). Ayden Hector is expected to play some time as nickelback, Dominic Morris will play at cornerback at times.

  • UTEP's last victory: 1988 (34-14)

UTEP has plenty of issues of its own to contend with, and CSU's talent from top to bottom should prevail (even with some key injuries). The Rams aren't consistent enough to pull off a complete victory from start to finish, but CSU wins comfortably with a strong running game and some key big plays in the passing game.
