Opta's computer makes Man Utd the sixth favourite to win the Europa League. Interesting to see Slavia Prague above them, isn't it?

The nature of modern United is that they cannot be trusted. They will inexplicably fail to master the basics of defence. They will think up strange ways to get goals disallowed for offside. They will waste chances. Partly it is quality, partly it is mentality, partly it is where the two meet and partly it is confidence.

preamble

Hi everyone. The bad news for Manchester United is that they are back in the Europa League; the good news is that they have a chance of winning it. That hasn't been the case in the Champions League since Sir Alex Ferguson retired; they haven't reached a semi-final since 2011 and last season they finished bottom of their group.

For now, the Europa League is United's level. They won it in 2017, finished second in 2021 and reached the quarter-finals in Erik ten Hag's first season. The new format means no Champions League teams will enter the knockout stages, so the winner will come from the 36 teams in the league stage. Contenders include Spurs, Lazio, Roma, Athletic Bilbao, Porto, Real Sociedad, Eintracht Frankfurt, Galatasaray and Jose Mourinho.

United start at home against FC Twente, who finished third in the Eredivisie last season after Ajax were absent. Three is the crucial number: that's how many times Ten Hag has been at Twente during his playing career, so this game will mean a lot to him. It won't be easy, but United can't afford a false start: their next two Europa League games are away to Porto and Mourinho.

Start 8 p.m.
