Massillon vs. St. Edward High School Football, 20 Numbers You Should Know

It will be hard to find a better high school football game in Week 5 than Massillon traveling to Lakewood to play St. Edward. The game will be a duel of the defending state champions and will feature exceptional talent on the field and on the sidelines.

The numbers combined by these two programs are impressive – both historically and since both teams hired their current head coaches in 2015 (they have combined for 211 wins since then).

Here are 10 numbers about each team that you should know before the big clash on Friday at 7 p.m.

Massillon Tigers football in numbers

  • 6: The number of interceptions by the Massillon defense this season. The Tigers have also intercepted six passes and recovered two fumbles.
  • 15-13: Result of last year's Massillon home win over St. Ed's, the Tigers' second consecutive victory in the series. They won the 2022 game in Massillon 31-28 and lead the all-time series 5-4 against the Eagles.
  • 25: The number of state titles won by the Massillon Tigers, including last year's OHSAA Division II championship.
  • 32: The number of tackles by team leader Jadyn Williams. Williams also has 2.5 tackles for loss and a quarterback sack this season.
  • 102: The number of wins by head coach Nate Moore since taking over as head coach of the Tigers in 2015. He has become the program's all-time winningest coach, surpassing Paul Brown in 2022. Moore has lost just 23 games, and his teams have an 80-10 record since 2018.
  • 232: The number of receiving yards of Jacques Carter this season. Carter is the team leader in this category. He is also the leading player with four receiving touchdowns. Braylyn Toles is the leading player with 18 catches.

  • 339: Ja'Meir Gamble's total rushing yards this season. Gamble is averaging 7.7 yards per carry and has scored six rushing TDs. He has had at least one TD run in all four games.
  • 859: The number of passing yards for quarterback Jalen Slaughter this year. Slaughter has completed 69 of 108 passes for 859 yards with seven touchdowns and one interception.
  • 951: The total number of wins for the Massillon football program is the highest in Ohio and the second highest in the country.
  • 1891: The year of Massillon's first high school football game. The Tigers have now been active for 129 seasons, including every season since 1903.

St. Edward Eagles Football in Numbers

  • 4: The number of returning All-Ohio players St. Edward has on the roster this season. They are Nate Gregory (RB-LB), Brandon White (RB), Bradley Eaton (DB-RB) and Kellen Moyer (K). All are Division I prospects. White was injured last week and did not play. Gregory is the Eagles' current all-time leader in tackles at linebacker.
  • 5: The number of Division I college offers officially made to White. These include Akron, Kent State, Marshall, Coastal Carolina and Robert Morris.

  • 7: The number of state titles won by St. Edward. The Eagles have won three consecutive Division I state championships. Six of those state titles have been won by current head coach Tom Lombardo. Lombardo has won seven state titles as a head coach, including one in 2001 with Lake Catholic.
  • 14: The number of Division I college programs that have made official offers to Eaton. These include schools such as Army, Air Force, Harvard, Penn, Bowling Green and Kent State.
  • 15: The number of consecutive extra points Moyer has made this season. Moyer made 54 of 57 extra point attempts and 5 of 5 field goal attempts in 2023.
  • 27: The number of consecutive games in which St. Edward has scored a touchdown. The Eagles had a 31-game touchdown streak in 2022 that was snapped in a 6-0 win over Cincinnati Moeller.
  • 35-18: The result of St. Ed's last win over Massillon in 2021.
  • 37: The number of consecutive games both Gregory and Eaton have started for St. Edward's defense.
  • 83: The number of consecutive games in which St. Edward has held an opponent under 40 points.
  • 109: The number of wins Lombardo has had since taking over the St. Edward program in 2015. Lombardo has lost just 17 games during that time. His teams are 48-4 since 2021.
