Purdue Football loses to Oregon State for the second year in a row

Remember the 2023 Purdue football season?

The Boilermakers have found a way to lose in so many competitive games.

Saturday night in Corvallis, Oregon, was reminiscent of many games last season.

Costly ball losses. Problems on the third and fourth attempts. Mistakes at the right time.

They were all factors in Purdue's 38-21 loss to Oregon State at Reser Stadium.

Purdue football team's offensive problems take their toll against Oregon State

The Boilermakers couldn't have asked for a better start. Oregon State risked a fourth down on the fourth play of the comeback and a try inside their own 30. Purdue's defense stopped the attack and made the field short.

Four plays later, Devin Mockobee fumbled inside the 10 and the Beavers recovered the ball. Purdue's second drive began with a swing pass that deflected and bounced off Reggie Love's leg right into the waiting arms of Zakaih Saez, who scored an easy pick-six.

In the first half, Purdue stalled on two drives in the red zone and scored zero points.

Max Klare’s 32-yard touchdown catch was the only memorable offensive highlight of the first half.

The Boilermakers were missing their best receiver, Jahmal Edrine, but that's no excuse for another lackluster performance against a team that had just as much talent.

Purdue defense shows clear progress

After what had happened against Notre Dame seven days earlier, things could only get better for the Boilermakers.

However, the defense looked nothing like the one that missed 30 tackles a week earlier. There were still too many chunk plays and the Boilers never adjusted to the option or the jet sweep.

Kydran Jenkins and Dillon Thieneman largely returned to form. The duo combined for 30 tackles and Jenkins added three tackles for loss, two sacks and two quarterback hurries to his 16-tackle performance.

The defense could have used some help from Purdue's offense, which had the ball for less than 10 minutes in the first half.

A final attempt by the defense was unsuccessful as they failed to stop an onside kick in the fourth quarter. Oregon State ended up with 341 rushing yards and four touchdowns.

Is the Hudson Card on the decline?

Purdue's quarterback is in the NCAA record book. Completing 24 of 25 in the season-opening win over Indiana State was impressive. Yes, the Sycamores were far less talented than Purdue, but impressive nonetheless.

That seems like a long time ago now.

Since that performance, which set an NCAA record for the number of successful passes in a game with at least 20 attempts, Card has been unsteady. He deserves a partial free pass against Notre Dame, as the Boilermakers had no running game and the Irish constantly bombarded Card.

But on Saturday, the Boilermakers showed a solid running game. Mockobee and Love combined for 234 yards.

Since the game against Indiana State, Card has now completed 18 of 41 (43.9%) for 180 yards.
