The Menendez brothers criticize Ryan Murphy's Netflix series “Monsters”

The Menendez brothers have sharply criticized Ryan Murphy's new Netflix series. Monster: The Story of Lyle and Erik Menendezfor what they consider to be “horrific lies” and “devastating character portrayals” in the show.

Lyle and Erik Menendez are still serving life sentences for the 1989 murder of their parents and have spent years trying to rehabilitate their image from murderers to victims of abuse at the hands of their parents. With his new show, Murphy has shattered all that, Erik said.

“Isn't the truth enough?” Erik wrote in a message on Lyle's Facebook page. “How demoralizing it is to know that one man with power can undo decades of progress in solving childhood trauma.”

According to Erik, the two-episode series portrays the brothers in the same way they were portrayed at their 1996 trial, where they were found guilty. “When the prosecution built a narrative on the belief system that men are not sexually abused and that men experience rape and trauma differently than women,” Erik wrote.

He added: “These horrific lies have been refuted and exposed over the past two decades by countless courageous victims who have overcome their personal shame and courageously spoken out.”

Netflix users also criticized the series for depicting the brothers in an incestuous relationship. In response, Lyle encouraged his followers to “Keep speaking up!”

“He showed more compassion to a serial killer/cannibal than to two rape victims who made the wrong choice because they felt trapped,” said one comment reposted on Lyle's Facebook page.

“I wish I could reach through the screen and give Lyle and Eric a big hug. Undeserved and completely bizarre,” commenter Laurie Nickel wrote under the message. “I can't even comprehend the reality they live in. I am so incredibly sorry. I am so sorry for both of them. Justice for Lyle and Eric!!”
