UK, Hollywood pays tribute to famous actress Maggie Smith

Tributes have been pouring in for famed British actress Maggie Smith following her death in London on Friday at the age of 89.

US actor Rob Lowe, who appeared alongside Smith in Suddenly, last summer (1989) was one of the first to take to social media in her memory and remembered the actress as an impressive figure.

“I am saddened to hear that Dame Maggie Smith has passed away. I had the unforgettable experience of working with her; Sharing a two-shot was like being paired with a lion,” he said in a post on X.

“It could eat anyone alive, and often did. But fun and great company. And you don't suffer fools. We'll never see another one again. Thank God, Mrs. Smith!”

Whoopi Goldberg, who starred alongside Smith Sister lawShe shared a picture of them together in the film on her Instagram account and said she felt “lucky” to have worked with the actress.

From the UK, Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who was in the US for the UN meeting in New York followed by a dinner hosted by Donald Trump, described Smith as “a true national treasure”.

“Dame Maggie Smith opened up new worlds to us with the countless stories she played throughout her long career,” he wrote.

“She was loved by so many for her great talent and became a true national treasure whose work will continue to be valued for generations to come. Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones. May she rest in peace.”

Piers Morgan described Smith's death as “a very, very sad loss for Britain”.

“Great actress, great lady. “As entertaining, sharp and funny off-screen as she was off-screen,” he wrote.
