American Airlines Group, Inc. EEL Shares are trading slightly lower on Friday.

The company is reportedly negotiating Citigroup, Inc. C its exclusive credit card partner, ending its long-standing partnership with Barclays PLC BCSwhich dates back to the airline's acquisition of US Airways in 2013, CNBC reported.

In March, Bloomberg reported that the airline was renegotiating its co-branded credit card deal to increase its share of a key revenue stream for U.S. airlines.

A Citigroup spokesperson told CNBC that the company continually works with its partners, including American Airlines, to find ways to improve customer products and promote shared value and growth.

Recent news from CNBC suggests that the company's talks are still ongoing and the timing for closing a deal, subject to regulatory approval, remains uncertain.

However, there is a possibility that objections from U.S. regulators, including the Department of Transportation, could delay or even kill a deal between American Airlines and Citigroup, leaving the existing partnership with Barclays unchanged, CNBC warned.

According to Benzinga Pro, AAL stock has lost over 15% in the past year. Investors can participate in the stock via US Global Jets ETF NOZZLES And Themes Airlines ETF AIRL.

Price promotion: At last check on Friday, AAL shares were trading 1.17% lower at $10.98.
